Podcasts are all the rage now but where are the ones that speak directly to our experiences? Here’s what’s on my radar:
Take Me Off Speakerphone
When I read the title, the first thing I heard was my auntie yelling at my Mom during one of their dramatic conversations in the 90s as a kid. Even though I could only hear my Mom’s end, I always had fun piecing together their stories. Just as cool as your favorite Aunties’ three way calls, Take Me Off Speakerphone (created by Morgan and Kyndacee) is a no-holds barred sisterhood of all the things you entrust with your friends packed with a classic around-the-way girl realness. Anytime you listen to something that reminds you of your real-life group chats, you’re in the right place. Here’s a tip: Listen to the recorded calls first + THEN listen to the podcasts. You can find them all here with playlists included.
Mattie & Chris
If you’ve visited MYCC before, you already understand that Mattie James is hands down one of my favorite bloggers (shown in exhibit A, B, and C). Adding to an already amazing repertoire, she’s joined forces with her husband Chris for their podcast Mattie & Chris. Think of it as a low-key kickback with friends you’ve known for years: entertaining, informative, and a few knowledge bombs dropped in between the discussions of pop culture and All-Star Weekend. Topics range from social media to Good Times to meal planning, grownup fun and everything in between. You can even tweet your questions to them + they’ll respond on their podcast. Make sure you subscribe on iTunes to help them reach their goal of 100,000 active and engaged listeners.
One Mo Minute
Everybody needs that ONE friend who will give it to you straight, with no chaser, no matter how much you’re in your feelings. Why? Because it’s good for you, they care about your well being, and want you to succeed. If you don’t have that in your life, I would suggest you listen to One Mo Minute. Right now. Media maven and blogger at The Single Black Female Project, Monique Mitchell shares lessons learned from her own journey and this transparency is not only lovable, it’s a breath of fresh air.
Negros With A Podcast
Yep. That’s right. And it’s just as hilarious, entertaining, aware, and full of whatever conversations men have when they’re together that you would expect from a podcast of this name. Negros With A Podcast features Four different Black men with Four different opinions on everything from Dame Dash, gentrification, college, NBA Legends, Black suburbs and more. It’s the perfect mashup of barbershop meets college group assignment talk. You’ll want to chime in by the end of the show. Tweet the crew your appreciation when you finish.
