A good business owner will tell you that the best business lies in selling. A great business owner will tell you that the best business lies in making people believe. That is exactly what Ashley Sneed of Urban Mondays is doing. Eclectic style, confidence, inner beauty, and culture are things that her boutique values but its true value lies in making sure that beauty starts from within.
Introduction and Interview by Melissa Kimble
What inspires you to create?
The nature of being creative inspires me to create! Creativity literally feeds my soul. I draw inspiration from food, art, travel, vivid colors, people I love. I see the beauty in everything and it drives me to make beautiful things to share with the world.
You describe Urban Mondays as a “way of life”. Why was it important to you to create a lifestyle brand as opposed to just a boutique?
I feel like the things that Urban Mondays represents-confidence, inner and outer beauty, culture, and eclecticism-are all things that develop over time and become a way of life. You can buy a few items from a boutique to feel great, but when the clothes are off and you’re in your bare skin, what’s left? It’s the confidence, love and inner exquisiteness that is the essence of who you are. And that essence is represented through UM’s creative pieces and personal styling concepts.
You’re adamant about style being something that’s achieved on a regular daily basis. What was the moment like when you realized that you have to constantly put your best foot forward, even on days when you don’t feel like it?
I wouldn’t say that I’m adamant about always looking good, but I am adamant about always feeling good. There are plenty of things that lift a person’s spirits, but I’ve often found that when you feel good on the outside, the inside doesn’t fall far behind. Do you feel good in sweats, a t-shirt and flip flops? Sure. But do you feel great? That’s questionable…To answer your second question, the moment I realized I had to constantly put my best foot forward was when my uber stylish boyfriend mentioned something about my swag being crazy and me out-dressing him everywhere we go. It’s second nature, but at that moment I knew I could never let him down. 🙂
How do you handle your “case of the Mondays”?
Wine and love.
It’s one thing to put looks together, but it’s another thing to have your own boutique. What led you to entrepreneurship and how has it changed your life?
Who doesn’t want to work for themselves? Urban Mondays began as a hobby, but later transformed into something more when I realized that I could actually make money doing this. On a constant quest to find my passion and what gives me true joy, I realized that this type of creative outlet is a part of that and so turning it into a business only makes sense. It has definitely changed my life; I never sleep and I eat, breathe and live work. But hard work pays off.
If you could create one piece for the rest of your life and share it with others, what would it be and why?
Wow, I really hope I would never have to be so limited. But if I did, it’d probably be the classic and eternal denim jacket. There’s so many things you can do to a denim jacket to make it unique and your own! Men love them, women love them. It’s a timeless piece that transcends across generations and will always be here to stay.
