Introduction and Interview by Melissa Kimble
What inspires you to create?
I’ve always been a creative person. I love thinking outside the box and trying new things. I’ve always been weird, so it’s easy for me to transition from one phase to the next. That’s how I view my ability to create style and make it my own. It’s all about stamping my own unique flavor unto something and calling it my own.
You have an amazing style and you’re not afraid to embrace your unique beauty and works for you. Where does that confidence come from?
I’ve always had high self esteem. The confidence derives from me knowing who I am and what I’m ab0ut. I take myself serious because I want to be taken serious. I live my life in the essence of knowing that based of my spiritual beliefs, God made no mistake when he created me. I’m divinely favored and have a divine purpose. I’m happy knowing that. Therefore, I’m confident that I “can do all things through Christ who has strengthened me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Believe it or not, I don’t get the opportunity to style very many plus sized women, unless I’m conducting my own style session for my brand. Usually, men hire me as the personal shopper/stylist. I hate to say it but some women find me intimidating. They would rather me tell them where specific pieces come from versus hiring me and asking me to style their plus bodies. It’s weird, but I accept things, even if I can’t change the circumstances. However, when I get the opportunities to style different plus models that I book for my style sessions, one of the biggest misconceptions that I’ve run into is that, “you can’t put plus size women in patterns.” Says who? I love experimenting with different patterns, colors, and designs on my plus models. I enjoy complimenting them as they’re being photographed because their confidence level rises.
I am loving polka dots, mint, and loud colors. Any piece of clothing with that, I’m down to wear!
Who are some of your style inspirations?
I’m strictly old school….like old old school. Sure, I can dig some of the fashions of today, but I’m a classic woman. I’m a fan of the style of Dorothy Dandridge, Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, and Eartha Kitt. Now, in regards to today’s designers, I love Manolo Blahnik, Prabal Gurung, Alexander McQueen, and Jean Paul Gaultier; I even like a little of Monif. C. I love dresses and skirts. I incorporate more of those kinds of pieces in my style than anything. I hate looking like anyone else. I’ll throw on some pearls, my pink lipstick, a dress, a classic handbag, and a pair of comfortable heels and ROCK OUT!
On Instagram, you are nowhere near shy about the process of building your brand and all of the hard work that goes into it. What are three qualities one must possess in order to actively pursue their dreams?
Passion, Drive, and Purpose. No one should ever put a lot of energy in something they are not passionate about. I am grateful to still be living. With every breath in me, I’m going to do what I love and make sure that I positively affect someone in the process. I’m all about being my own hype. I market myself and I go that extra mile to make sure that I’m on top of my game. I’m such a perfectionist. The last thing I want to be known for is being passive, lazy, and unexciting. I go hard for what I want and I make sure that I’m leaving a pleasant taste in the mouths of those who are eating my fashion style. I have a purpose: I’m a stylist. I want my name to be synonymous with plus high fashion and style, therefore I have to do things that I’ve never done to be known for something that I never thought I would be known for. You have to want it so bad that you’ll miss sleep, meals, and even working a regular 9-5 to have it.
