Introduction and Interview by Melissa Kimble
What inspires you to create?
I am a Gemini, lol, so I am completely and totally random alot! It could be the simple picture of a flower or the brainchild of something forming in my head; or a piece of fabric or even a song. Creativity is a vital part of the human experience and without it life is stale and almost repugnant. Living is really the inspiration — I know this may sound like some “crazy talk”, but really what is life without creating and sharing.
Many have the misconception that styling is simply putting an outfit together. Can you explain your creative process?
Well styling is putting together an outfit but for it to stand out and make the statement you and or the client is looking for is not simple. For me it involves a lot of staring, staring at inspiration photos from the client, staring at the garments in showrooms and imagining the person in the garment, and too thinking if it really conveys the theme or if it is just simply a cool outfit. Music too is a great way to keep the creative process flowing and many times it allows me to a little more imaginative. A large part of my creative process is being confident that I can do it and make it happen – without having that faith in myself it kind of stunts the process and that can kill a project if I am not confident in my own skills.
Wow! “A life changer and a game changer”, that is one SUPER compliment! THANK YOU! I think for me it is knowing your body at any size and how to dress it is really important and conveying that to others is just as important. We all know the saying “everythang, ain’t for everybody!” and that is the REALEST saying ever!!!! You don’t have to be small to look awesome, you just have to know what looks good on your body. Too, I think it is highly important that most important accessory is confidence; I mean without confidence there is not one thing that you will be able to tackle with heart. If you are confident there are so many more things that will be open to you based solely on that confidence and carrying it at all times. And one of the best glam tips is to use a tailor!!! There is nothing better looking and better feeling than something that fits you perfectly. Many, many times items right off the rack will not fit you properly and will not flatter and because of this you loose out on being confident and too on mastering the glam tip knowing what works for your body. A tailor or alteration specialist will save your life!!!!! That may be the HUGE exaggeration, lol – but there is much truth in that exaggeration!
You credit the success of your budding company to your dual approach of great styling and efficient business strides. How important was it for you master both sides and how do you sharpen those skills?
When I decided to go to college I at first really, really, really wanted to go for some sort of fashion degree. At the time my decision to go to school for Business Management won out as I didn’t know too much about the fashion world, and a business degree can take you much further as it is a very open ended degree. I credit much of the way I operate with my background of working at both accounting and engineering firms and being at the start up level of one. I had a lot to do and a lot to learn in working with a start up and everything I have learned and know from that experience has been invaluable. As far as sharpening those skills I would have to say by continuous learning as I go along and too by engaging with people in both industries fashion and business. Really business is the best friend of everything, anything can become a business with the proper tools. There is a never a time to stop learning, EVER, and if you feel you have learned everything you have failed.
You’re very confident with your look – no matter what mode you are in. What tips would you give to someone who’s afraid to stand out with their unique style?
My advice would be, free yourself!!!!!!! FREE YOURSELF!!!!! If you want to wear it, color it, work it, rock it, do it! In the end it is about what you like, love and what message you want to convey. Life is too short to be afraid to at least try. Now, I know that advice to some is not very helpful as fear takes a lot of what we really wanna do away from us. So if you are a little fearful start in small stages, possibly you want to incorporate a new color into your wardrobe try it with accessories, or you want to try a new style or trend try it with an inexpensive item and if you like it build on it and even upgrade to one you can add to your wardrobe as a staple. The URBN VNTG motto is “It’s about having style, not being in style”. Your style is a reflection of you and a representation of your spirit. So again….. FREE YOURSELF!!!!
The moment you decided to create your own business, how did you “style” your life for success and prosperity?
I made sure that the small simple things are in place, a working email address, a working website, being responsive, being active on social media and the biggest part BELIEVING IN MYSELF. You would be surprised at how many business cards I get or pages or people I come across that don’t have active websites or email address, to me that is a deterrent and states that you are not into your brand or yourself. While I know some may disagree with me, I feel that if you are going to put yourself out there then you should put the best you out there that is possible.
